Extravagance, Beauty, and Heartbreak Combine Into One Resonant Performance
At the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, everyone can have an opportunity to experience excellence. Home to the Kansas City Ballet, the Kauffman Center embraces a variety of audiences with different tastes, interests and passions. Don’t miss out when Kansas City Ballet presents Lady of the Camellias on Sunday, February 17!
One of the greatest love stories of all time, The Lady of the Camellias recounts the history of Marguerite Gautier, the most beautiful, brazen, and expensive courtesan in all of Paris. Known to all as 'the Lady of the Camellias' because she is never seen without her favorite flowers, she leads a glittering life of endless parties and aristocratic balls, with the richest men in France flocking to give her their fortunes.
But despite having many lovers, she has never really loved - until she meets Armand Duval, young, handsome and from a lower social class, and yet hopelessly in love with Marguerite.
Val Caniparoli’s popular adaptation of this classic story is set to the romantic score by Frédéric Chopin, and deftly depicts the moving story of beauty, extravagance, jealousy, deception and heartbreak. Alexandre Dumas’ tragic love story has inspired many adaptations, including Greta Garbo’s Camille and Baz Luhrman’s Moulin Rouge!, but none more popular than Verdi’s opera La Traviata.
Tickets can be purchased now starting at $40.50 and may be purchased online through the Kauffman Center’s website or by calling the Kansas City Ballet Box Office at 816-931-8993.
