Tis the Season for Multicultural Understanding! Get Yours During This Folk Art Exhibit
This holiday season, expand your cultural understanding of folk art at a very special exhibition at Central Library in Kansas City. This week, Craft Research Lab presents the final installment of its ongoing series, Mattie Rhodes Folk Art Collection. A stunning assembly of intercultural folk art pieces, this event on Thursday, December 27th promises to shed light on a largely unseen art collection.
This retrospective exhibit, the last in a yearlong series curated by Kansas City Art Institute students, spotlights selected works from the rarely viewed folk art collection at Kansas City’s westside Mattie Rhodes Center. Objects range from sculpture, ceramics, textiles, and toys to masks from Latin American, Hispanic and Pueblo Indian artists of the Southwestern United States. Included are pieces made by children from the Mattie Rhodes Art Center, where educational material has been developed from pieces in the collection.
The Hand-in-Hand Folk Art Collection was started by Alice Ann Biggerstaff. Although she never meant to start a collection, Alice Ann acquired hundreds of pieces of folk art through her world travels and her friendships with people of different cultures.
In 1995, Alice Ann donated her large folk art collection to the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation (GKCCF) to start the Hand-in-Hand-Folk Art Collection. Mattie Rhodes Center became an active partner of Hand-in-Hand in 1999 when the agency began continuously displaying pieces from the collection in permanent cases in the Mattie Rhodes Art Gallery.
Be sure to see this exhibit before it shutters on December 30th! Admission to the Central Library is free. Parking at the library is free for one hour and costs 1 dollar per additional twenty minutes. For more information regarding hours, parking, and the exhibit, visit www.kclibrary.org.
